Right after high school, I joined the military and went into boot camp. Following that, I went into the Marine reserves and started my college journey in parallel.

Leveraging my military background and college education, I started my career within the supply chain industry as a supervisor for Wal-Mart Distribution. I worked there and at other Fortune 50 companies for about 25 years. Then I landed at AmerisourceBergen. I was quickly impressed with how similar the culture here was compared to my team in the USMC. From putting people first to being bold and staying humble, it simply fit. Everyone here is on a shared mission to impact lives and be purpose driven in our day to day.

Just like the military, I chose to stay here because of our commitment to excellence in everything we do. I’m now part of the supply chain lead team, where I’m responsible for the operations of nearly 50 pharmaceutical distribution centers across the United States and Puerto Rico. I have also had the opportunity to sit on the board of the AmerisourceBergen Foundation and serve as a member of our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Global Council.

The Marine Corp taught me how to be disciplined in my approach, work hard, value the strengths of my colleagues, and do what is right each day. I love that this company supports and values veterans because of those qualities. We’re very intentional with how we help veterans build that bridge to the corporate world, and our Veterans in Action (VIA) employee resource group (ERG) does an outstanding job of enabling a smooth transition.

I enlisted in the Air Force out of high school, was stationed throughout the world, and eventually got accepted into the AFROTC program in pharmacy. After graduating from college, I was stationed in Colorado and Alaska before transitioning over to the Indian Health Service as part of the U.S. Public Health Service. I was then detailed to the Coast Guard in Florida and Washington, D.C., serving as the USCG Chief Pharmacist. My final assignment was being on active duty with the FDA in the Office of Generic Drugs.

Upon retirement from active duty, I was honored to be selected in my current role as the VP, Government Accounts, managing and maintaining our U.S. Department of Defense relationship. It’s rewarding to work with my fellow DoD, Coast Guard, and USPHS federal pharmacy colleagues to enhance and improve the services and products we offer. I’ve chosen to stay with this company because our people are so resilient when it comes to delivering innovative healthcare solutions. Our teams harness the collective good and stay focused on purpose-driven execution to create healthier futures for patients around the world.

As a veteran, my military training and experience help me be a better resource to my teammates. My time on active duty provided me with unparalleled leadership and interpersonal skills, and AmerisourceBergen fully recognizes that. They welcome and encourage veterans to integrate their invaluable knowledge, work ethic, loyalty, problem solving, and adaptability into their role.

I’m also incredibly thankful for the VIA ERG, as they provide the unique opportunity to collaborate with fellow veterans. They also host speaking engagements with veterans outside the organization, organize volunteer opportunities, and collaborate with our talent acquisition team to better incorporate veterans into our overall DEI strategy.

In my late twenties, I joined the U.S. Army as an E4, serving from May 2011 through December 2014. I assumed it would be easy to find a role as a veteran with a Master of Arts degree in Human Resource Management, which I received while in the service. It turned out to be more difficult than I thought. Luckily, I found a local HR professional organization, Dallas HR, and was able to attend events and form relationships that helped me find my footing as a civilian.

I accepted an HR Generalist role at AmerisourceBergen after working for a different company throughout 2015. Since joining the organization, I was promoted to HR Business Partner and I later accepted a lateral move to Manager, Talent Management.

When I first came onboard, I never imagined I would still be working here after so many years. I stay because I’ve been blessed with amazing leadership invested in my growth, and I’ve had the opportunity to create communities with ERGs like VIA, the Black Organization for Networking and Development (BOND), and the Emerging Professionals Network (EPN). I love my work and I’m so thankful for the connections I’ve developed during my time here.

There are so many different paths you can take as you exit the military. It’s important to remain open to trying new avenues, taking risks, and carving out a path that is authentic to you. Never underestimate all the transferable skills you have that will help you as a civilian. Believe in yourself and everything you bring to the table — not only as a veteran, but as yourself.

When I look back on my time in the military, the most important thing I learned about myself is that I am adaptable. I know I can enter any situation and improve it. If you take stock of what you’ve done in the service, you’ll find skills that are applicable to the new path you’re on as well, especially when you bring those skills here.
